What once acted as a small storage area at Bishop McGann-Mercy Diocesan High School in Riverhead has now become a state-of-the-art weight room and fitness center.
High school principal Carl Semmler welcomed a group of coaches, students and community members at Tuesday’s ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the new $150,000 facility, which was paid through donations and fundraising efforts.
The new weight room has been about two years in the making and features several Hammer Strength fitness machines. The school has been designated as the only official “Hammer Strength Center” in Suffolk County, Mr. Semmler said.
The exercise facility also features dumbbells sporting the school’s logo, as well as weight and cardiovascular machines, rubberized flooring reflecting the school’s colors, and air conditioning.
In addition to the new workout facility, Mr. Semmler said the auditorium was recently turned into a “multipurpose room” in order to accommodate several physical education classes at once — especially during the winter months.
“It really is a very exciting room,” he said. “It’s for our teams, students, administrators and faculty.”
